The Truth About Heavy Equipment “Certification”

Here is the fact that reframes everything else on this page: for excavators, loaders, dozers, motor graders, haul trucks, and compactors, there is no government operator license — federal or state. OSHA regulates these machines by putting the duty on the employer instead. 29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2) requires you to instruct each employee in the recognition and avoidance of the unsafe conditions of their work, and 1926.602 sets the equipment rules for earthmoving machinery. No government card appears anywhere in that framework.

One machine in the catalog does carry an explicit written rule: the telehandler, which OSHA classifies as a Class 7 rough-terrain forklift under 1910.178(l) — formal training plus a hands-on evaluation, repeated at least every three years. Is there a government license for heavy equipment operators?

No. For excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, haul trucks, and compactors, no federal or state operator license exists. Do online heavy equipment certificates satisfy OSHA?

Can you train brand-new operators, or only evaluate experienced ones?

Both. How long does training take per machine?

A typical single-machine session for an experienced crew runs one day — classroom and written test in the morning, coached practicals and scored evaluations in the afternoon. Do operators need retraining every year?

No annual federal requirement exists for these machines. What records do we receive, and when?

Before the instructor leaves: a training roster and topic outline, each operator’s written test, each operator’s scored practical evaluation signed by evaluator and operator, and wallet cards identifying the machine classes covered — plus an honest not-ready flag for anyone who needs more seat time, with what it would take to get there.

Do you bring machines, or do we train on ours?

We train and evaluate on your machines, deliberately. Your operators will run your iron, your attachments, and your ground conditions after we leave, so that’s what the qualification should describe. It’s also what makes the record credible to a GC or insurer: the evaluation happened on the equipment the crew actually uses every day.

What happens if an operator does not pass the evaluation?

The sheet says not ready, and it says why — the specific tasks, the specific gaps.
